For Older Adults
Our Generations Unit for seniors provides psychiatric treatment for those who are experiencing severe emotional and behavioral difficulties. Significant changes in one’s life due to loss of a loved one or loss of independence may cause emotional distress, and coping with these changes may cause emotional or behavioral difficulties severe enough to interfere with daily living.
Signs and symptoms:
- Depressed mood or extreme feelings of sadness and grief
- Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts or self-harm
- Isolating and withdrawing from life
- Hearing voices or visual hallucinations
- Decline in general health and physical fitness
- Increased irritability, anger and agitation
- Fear of losing independence
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Insomnia or excessive sleeping
- Significant weight loss or gain
- Cognitive impairments
- Drug or alcohol abuse
Senior mental health problems are frequently misdiagnosed as cognitive impairments, organic disorders or a physical health problem. Proper psychiatric diagnosis and treatment are critical in restoring one’s emotional health and physical wellbeing.
